Motherhood is the best feeling in the world but sometimes, you are asked to give up something to look after the family and run the household. Being a mother and pursuing a career do not work for all. For mothers who choose to become stay-at-home parent, it doesn’t mean that you are lesser than those who pursue their careers. Becoming a stay-at-home parent is a difficult decision but it can be worth it at the end of the day. Stay-at-home parents can make a difference at the end of the day.

Even if you stopped pursuing your career, you can still be productive and contribute to the household. Here are some things that you can consider to cope with Singapore’s costly living:


  • The possibility of flexible work hours: There are companies that understand some parents thereby giving flexible working hours. If you cannot commit to an eight to five working schedule, you should ask for the possibility of flexible working hours.
  • Become an entrepreneur: Becoming an entrepreneur offers limitless possibilities but you have to know that it presents huge risk. You have to be ready to accept the risk if you want to take the plunge. The first thing that you have to do is to determine what venture to consider and set your mind to it. It doesn’t have to be big at first. There are many successful microbusinesses here in Singapore.
  • The possibility of investing: You never thought of investing when you were working and collecting monthly compensation. However, when you decided to settle at home, many ideas will come to mind including investing. There are many investment opportunities here if you look closely enough.
  • Work from home: Working from home is a concept popular in many countries. Here, employers may not be as accommodating as others but if you have good relationship with them, you can negotiate working from home. If you cannot negotiate with your employers, you can still work at home by looking for freelance works. Employers will base from your output.

If you are serious about leaving your jobs but still want to earn some money, you have to consider the things mentioned above. If you stop working, it is difficult to live here in Singapore relying on your husband for everything. There is still a chance for you to improve your finances.
